Specialist veterinary services

At Dogwood Vets we provide the following specialist referral services.

At DogWood Vets, we offer a range of specialist veterinary services. All of our specialist cases are overseen by Don Sheahan. He has numerous qualifications, including an ECVS, which means that he’s recognised as a European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. You’ll struggle to find a vet more qualified to help your pets back to good health and happiness.

Soft tissue surgery

Surgery of the neck, airways, chest and abdomen is usually classified as soft tissue surgery.

Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery

At Dogwood Vets, we have a highly skilled veterinary soft tissue surgery team led by Donald Sheahan, who has undergone extensive further training in order to ensure that he is qualified to undertake every case he sees. He’s joined by Eleanor Pass and Lucy Ferguson. As a team, they are committed to giving every patient they treat the quality of care they need.

Veterinary soft tissue surgery involves operating on any parts of the body that aren’t the musculoskeletal system and the central nervous system. This typically involves surgery of the neck, airways, chest, and abdomen, as well as some oncology procedures. It’s a highly varied discipline that our expert team is more than qualified to handle.

Common Soft Tissue Problems

With our expert team and our cutting edge facilities, we are able to treat such conditions as:

- Urinary problems

- Ear diseases

- Breathing difficulties

- Traumatic injuries

- Tumours

- Swellings

- Perineal ruptures

Though we are able to treat a number of conditions on a routine basis, we are often required to implement a more bespoke intervention.

Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery – What to Expect

Every soft tissue surgery procedure starts with a consultation process. We’ll spend some time discussing your pet’s medical history whilst performing all necessary examinations, in a process that takes around 20 to 60 minutes.

Our small animal soft tissue surgery specialists will make clear recommendations as to how we should proceed, making you fully aware of all costs and risks, as well as the expected outcome.

If you’re happy for us to proceed, in most cases, the animal soft tissue surgery can commence on the very same day.

Why Choose Dogwood Vets?

- Bespoke interventions where necessary

- Same-day consultation and operation for urgent cases

- First class, top of the range facilities

- Friendly and approachable service

Orthopaedics

Any surgery of the bones or joints is orthopaedics.

At Dogwood Vets, we have an expert veterinary orthopaedic surgery team that includes Donald Sheahan, Eleanor Pass, and Lucy Ferguson. As a team, they are highly qualified – Donald, for example, is accredited as a European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery – and utterly committed to giving every patient the quality of care they need.

Common Small Animal Orthopaedic Problems

Veterinary orthopaedic surgery involves surgery of the bones and the joints, to treat such conditions as:

- Arthritis

- Lameness

- Fractured bones

- Dislocated kneecaps

- Limb deformities

We can also carry out total hip operations. Whilst we are able to treat a number of conditions on a routine basis, some cases require us to implement a more bespoke procedure.

Veterinary Orthopaedic Surgery – What to Expect

As accurate diagnosis is essential for successful treatment, every orthopaedic surgery procedure starts with a detailed consultation process. We’ll spend 20 to 60 minutes discussing your pet’s medical history whilst performing all necessary examinations. Our orthopaedic vets will then make clear recommendations as to how we should proceed, making you fully aware of all costs and risks, as well as the expected outcome.

If you’re happy for us to proceed, we will then book your pet in for surgery. If the case is urgent enough, we may undertake the surgery on the same day as the consultation. We will make sure that we take time to discuss and arrange the specific aftercare requirements of your pet.

To ensure that your pet has fully recovered from the effects of anaesthesia, and to check their wounds, we’ll ask you to make a follow up visit two to three days after the procedure. We’ll also ask you to pay us a visit two weeks after the operation, so that we can assess your pet’s progress.

Veterinary Neurosurgery

Any surgery of the brain or vertebral column (spine) is neurosurgery.

Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery

At Dogwood Vets, we have a highly skilled veterinary neurology and neurosurgery team led by Donald Sheahan, who is accredited as a BSc BVSc FHEA Cert SAS dipECVS European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. Also on his team are Eleanor Pass and Lucy Ferguson, who are both committed to giving every patient the quality of care they need.

Veterinary neurology and neurosurgery involves the study and the treatment of diseases of the nervous system, the part of the body that includes the brain, the spinal column, nerves, and muscles. As a discipline, neurology requires in-depth knowledge of both medicine and surgery.

Many of our specialists have undergone extensive further training in order to ensure that they’re qualified to undertake every case they see. With our expert multidisciplinary team and our cutting edge facilities, we are able to treat such conditions as:

- Epilepsy

- Intervertebral and cervical disc disease

- Disc extrusions or protrusions

- Facial paralysis

- Myositis

- Strokes

- Wobbler syndrome

- Dorsal laminectomies at L7/S1

- Hemilaminectomies for disc extrusions / protrusions

- Ventral slots for cervical disc disease

Whilst we are able to treat a number of conditions on a routine basis, some cases require us to implement a more bespoke intervention.
