What is microchipping?

A small microchip is inserted under your pet’s skin containing a unique number which is stored on a national database with you and your pet’s details.

Microchipping is an excellent way to ensure your pet can always be reunited with you should it go missing. From 6 April 2016, it is compulsory for owners to ensure their dog is microchipped.

Here at Parker and Crowther Ltd we are pleased to offer our non and existing clients a microchipping service to your pets.

What is a microchip?
-A small chip, the size of a grain of rice, is inserted between the shoulder blades of a dog using a sterile needle

-The procedure does not require an anaesthetic and is no more painful than a standard vaccination

-The chip is coated in a bio-compatible glass, the same material used in human pacemakers, which is not rejected by the dog’s body

-The device fuses to the dog’s bodily tissue.

Is your pet microchipped? If the answer is no, we strongly urge you to get this done asap. It’s quick, easy, simple to do and only takes two minutes. The nurse or vet can do it in a consult.

If the answer is yes…are your contact details up to date? According to Petlog, 8 out of 10 pets are microchipped, but many details are out of date.

If you have any questions regarding microchipping or to book an appointment for your pet please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss this, our dedicated team are always happy to help you.

Pet Passport

As of January 1st 2012 the pets passport has been simplified. If you want to take your dog, cat or ferret on holiday within the EU.

Firstly your pet needs to be microchipped – this is however something you should consider doing whether or not you are travelling abroad.

Secondly your pet will need a rabies injection and this information will need recording in a pets passport.

You will be able to travel in and out of the UK three weeks after the rabies injection. There is no longer any need for a rabies blood test.

Before re-entering the UK your pet will need treating for tapeworm. This must be done 1-5 days before arriving in the UK.

The regulations may be different if you are staying abroad for an extended period or if you are travelling outside the EU.

If in doubt check the government website www.defra.gov.uk/pets

or phone the PETS HELPLINE on 0870 241 1710
