What is KS1 Maths?

KS1 is the two years of schooling in maintained schools in England and Wales normally known as Year 1 and Year 2, when pupils are aged between 5 and 7 years.

Topics covered within KS1 include:

Addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, doubling and halving, simple mental maths, shape and space, times tables, measuring and weighing, using money & telling the time.

At the end of KS1, students sit SATs exams which are marked by teachers within the school.

What is KS2 Maths?

Key Stage 2 is the four years of schooling in maintained schools in England and Wales normally known as Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, when pupils are aged between 7 and 11 years.

During KS2 students become much more confident with maths: they are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, as well as doing mental calculations and solving problems using time, measure or money.

By the end of Year 6, students should have a secure grasp of their times tables up to 12.

At the end of KS2, students sit SATs exams which are sent away to be marked externally.

What is KS3 Maths?

KS3 is the term for the three years of schooling in maintained schools in England and Wales normally known as Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9, when pupils are aged between 11 and 14 years.

Key areas of study include: number, algebra, ratio, proportion and rates of change, geometry, statistics & probability.

At the end of KS3, the school provides end of year internal Maths assessments in preparation for GCSEs.

What is KS4 Maths?

KS4 is the term for the two years of school education which incorporate GCSEs, and other examinations, in maintained schools in England normally known as Year 10 and Year 11, when pupils are aged between 14 and 16 years. Key stage 4 is a vital time for students as they focus on the practical side of mathematics. It tests the ability of a candidate to apply core mathematical concepts to solve mathematical problems derived from everyday lives.

Recently a new grading system has been introduced where 9 is the highest grade, while 1 is the lowest (not including a U which is ‘ungraded’).

Key areas of study include: number, algebra, ratio, proportion and rates of change, geometry, statistics and general problem solving.

What is KS5 Maths?

Key Stage 5 is a label used to describe the two years of A Level education for students aged 16-18 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The format for A level Maths and Further Maths is modular and includes study of: Core Maths, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths.
