Community Paediatric Service

The Paediatric Dental Team provides care for children up to the age of 16 years old.

We accept referrals from dentists and other health care professionals for children with:

special needs

behavioural problems

complex medical problems

dental anxiety

extractions with sedation or general anaesthesia (see criteria below)

Children in care and vulnerable children.

The first appointment is for assessment only and can usually be undertaken local to the child’s home. Some specialist services, however, are only provided in certain clinics.

Mobile dental services are also provided at some special schools and schools where children have lots of decay.

We encourage all children to attend the family dentist once treatment is completed, unless the child will continue to need special support (e.g. special needs children).

Our Team:

Our Team is led by a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry giving our clinicians ready access to specialist advice. Many of our dentists are trained in inhalation sedation and have much experience in working with children. Dental therapists, hygienists and dental nurses are available to provide some services, too.

Where:

Our service extends across the whole of Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley and there are many local clinics where services can be provided.

Inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia (GA) require specialist equipment and so can only be provided in certain places.

We are able to offer GA for extractions (but not orthodontic extractions) in Sandwell, Walsall and Dudley (limited to age 12 in Dudley) and assessment is offered in selected clinics. (In Birmingham GA services are provided through the Birmingham Dental Hospital and should be referred directly to the hospital.) Sedation can be offered across all areas (including for orthodontic extractions) but may only be available at selected clinics, too.
