Your plan, our action

When you arrive at Buchanan House, we will work with you to develop a personalised care plan that will include everything from your hobbies, exercise, and dietary preferences, to any health issues you might have. It will determine the level and type of care you receive. This can vary from minimal residential care to full support.

What happens if my care needs change?

Don’t worry, if your needs or preferences change, we’ll change your care plan too.

We try to avoid moving residents from their rooms if possible. We have nursing and residential residents throughout the home so that residents will not have to move rooms should their needs change. This allows for continuity of staff and ensures the resident remains in familiar homely surroundings.

However, should a resident’s dementia journey become disruptive to others in a frail and elderly unit, a move to the dementia unit would be considered with consultation with relatives and the resident where appropriate.

The best for you

While we deliver excellent palliative care here, if a resident’s pain and distress was not able to be managed by a local GP a transfer to a hospice would be considered. Obviously, for acute illnesses such as chest infections, anaemia, fractures, etc. a resident may need to go to hospital for treatment.

Recreation and activity at buchanan house

Get involved
At Buchanan House there’s always something to keep everyone engaged in just the way they’d like.

Our Recreation and Activities team oversee everything: from coffee mornings and quizzes to crafts and pampering sessions. If it’s sunny we try and get outside, so everyone can appreciate the best of the day.

Activities are planned a month in advance by our activities coordinator, and take place six days a week. Key calendar events are always planned for well in advance, because we enjoy any excuse for a party.

We believe in living life to the full. That’s why we do our upmost to ensure that our residents have access to a varied programme of activities to deliver the Magic Moments that will help them love every day.

Embracing technology
Technology has opened up the world for us here; keeping our residents connected and stimulated. We have a tablet which we use to encourage residents to play games and use Skype to talk to family. We try to make sure everyone gets exactly what they want from it – and it’s something we plan on using more and more.

Residents’ choice
Activities are chosen based on discussions with residents and their relatives, so we can be sure everyone’s looking forward to something, every day. Everything’s flexible. If you’d rather relax in your room, plan something with friends and family, or socialise in the living room – that’s your decision.

We’ve built excellent links to the community, allowing residents to continue their lives outside the home with ease. We arrange trips out on our own bus three times a week to local shops, cafes and pubs. We also have great special events like our annual garden party which is enjoyed by residents, relatives and staff alike.

FAQ
Do any residents attend places of worship?
We encourage people who want to carry on practising their religion to do so, and we try and help facilitate that wherever possible. We have church services twice monthly and we also have bible study fortnightly. We have a local chaplain who visits to give communion. Most of our residents are Church of Scotland or Roman Catholic denomination but we would be able to access synagogues or local mosques should this be required.

Are pets allowed in the home?

This completely depends on the type of animal. We may be able to accommodate smaller animals, so will have a chat with you about it first to see if it’s possible. A number of relatives bring dogs (and the odd cat) to the home to visit their loved ones.

Food and dining at Buchanan House

At Buchanan House, we love our food
We firmly believe that when you eat well, you live well too. This is a core part of our brighterkind philosophy of care, centering on good nutrition and the importance of mealtimes as a social occasion.

Our dining rooms are always set to restaurant standards, so residents need worry about nothing but enjoying the food.

Each day our chef prepares restaurant-style meals combining variety with a balanced diet and an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Our residents get involved in helping to plan our menus, too.

The dining rooms always become a hub of conversation and laughter, which gives even our more frail residents a chance to come together and socialise. Whether it’s tea and cakes in the garden or a roast each Sunday, we encourage our residents to make the most of living in an active and friendly environment.

Of course, when, where and who you eat with is entirely up to you. Friends and family can join you as often as you’d like (at a small charge), and our extras menu gives you the option to order snacks at any time of the day. There is a small kitchenette in each unit for visitors and residents to make snacks and beverages.

Special requirements
If you have any special dietary requirements or preferences, please let us know on arrival. We are happy to cater to your needs and wishes, however complex.

FAQ
Are beverages served with meals?
Residents are offered a choice of two Bolero drinks per meal and jugs are available throughout the day. Fresh orange juice, tea and coffee are also available. We have a drinks trolley where a variety of alcoholic beverages are offered in the afternoon by our hospitality staff. Relatives may also provide alcoholic beverages for residents who enjoy a night cap or something similar.

What provisions are made for residents’ birthdays?

Residents’ birthdays are always marked if they want them to be. If relatives would like to reserve a special room for the event, just let us know and this can be accommodated. We sometimes order special food in for residents’ birthdays, depending on their wishes.

Respite and short stay care over the Spring period

Respite or convalescence care in a brighterkind care home.

Respite care is for those wishing to stay with us on a short-term basis, whether you temporarily need extra support or are recovering from an illness or operation.

Generally our homes do not have minimum or maximum length of stay. We are flexible so that we can help carers who need a break. In some cases we are also able to offer a 'book ahead' service.

Respite care offers you the care, support and safety you need. Spending anything from a week to a month with us can also provide a short rest for those caring for you at home.
