Big Changes to the National Curriculum and What it Means for Your Child
Today the Department for Education revealed the results of the Curriculum and Assessment Review Final Report, marking a major overhaul of the curriculum in England.
Here are some of the key changes:
• Reduction of exam time at GCSE level by around 10% (roughly 2.5–3 hours) to ease pressure and give students more breathing room.
• Introduction of a Year 6 national writing test and a Year 8 national reading test to monitor progress and ensure consistency across schools.
• Broadening of the curriculum to include AI and data literacy, media literacy (spotting fake news and digital communication), and a stronger oracy (spoken communication) focus.
• Citizenship, financial literacy, climate education, and life skills to be introduced earlier and taught more consistently from primary level.
• A renewed emphasis on the arts, creative subjects, and STEM. Triple science (biology, chemistry, and physics) will be made available to all GCSE students, while arts and languages regain stronger status.
• The full revised National Curriculum will be published in 2027, with first teaching from September 2028, followed by GCSE reforms.
How Cambridge Academic Tuition Can Help
At Cambridge Academic Tuition, we are already preparing to support students and families through these changes.
• Expert guidance on entrance and curriculum alignment: With our experience helping students apply to UK independent day and boarding schools, we ensure that each child’s preparation is aligned with what schools will expect under the revised framework.
• Targeted support for literacy, oracy, and life skills: We offer lessons that strengthen reading and writing skills ahead of the new Year 6 and Year 8 national tests, as well as sessions in spoken communication, digital literacy, and critical thinking.
• Depth over breadth: As GCSE content is refined and exam time reduced, our tuition focuses on understanding, application, and transferable skills rather than surface-level content.
• Subject-specialist tutoring for STEM and the arts: Whether your child is pursuing triple science, exploring creative subjects, or extending their interest in coding, AI, or data, we provide expert tutors and tailored resources.
• Future-proofing independent school applications: For students applying to selective schools or international entrance exams, we integrate the new curriculum developments into interview preparation, exam readiness, and school choice strategy.
Change can feel daunting, but with the right guidance, it becomes an advantage. At Cambridge Academic Tuition, we ensure your child is not only ready for the next stage of education but positioned to thrive through it.
