Tutoring in Schools

We have built relationships with schools across London, providing tutors to run one-to-one tutoring sessions either during the school day, out of term time or evenings and weekends. These can take place on the school site or at the young person’s home.

Many schools use their Pupil Premium funding to provide this targeted support for young people to increase progress and/or to help students gain confidence in the classroom. A private tutor can often provide an opportunity for a young person to have a ‘clean sheet’ and set up a new learning relationship which can be transferred into mainstream learning.

Evidence shows that Pupil Premium in schools is largely been spent on 1 to 1 tuition and is shown to be one of the most effective ways to influence education.

Tutors are also available to do small group work in the same way. We work with some schools to provide home tuition over holiday periods to provide continuity. We also provide tuition support for young people in care to support homework or particular subject areas.

If you are a teacher or a school we are happy to talk through your tutoring requirements and put a package of support in place that meets your needs and those of your young people.

Primary/11+

Helping to prepare your child in the early years can help build a firm foundation for later education. This support does not have to be through a formal lesson working with your child to increase attainment, the tutor can be an additional support to your family to help build your child’s confidence, skills or help with the transition into a new learning environment, moving schools for example or through the SATS process.

Our tutors can help support you with your child’s vocabulary, literacy and numeracy and can be led by the needs you feel your child has. Working together with the parents is an invaluable part of the tuition process, enabling the tutor to build a relationship with your child and help them to build foundations to progress.

11 plus

If you are thinking of getting a tutor to help your child for 11 plus it is always best to allow a tutor ample time to fully support a child as some children need a little time to build confidence to feel equipped to sit an exam.

The 11 plus test is taken in Year 6 in England as the entrance exam for certain grammar schools. Tests vary in each local authority and can involve different tests including verbal reasoning, manipulating letters, words, numbers and non-verbal reasoning, relationships between shapes.  Mathematics and English tests can also be included in some local authorities and grammar school exams but not to the same extent as verbal and non verbal tests.

English

English (or Literacy) forms part of the school curriculum from reception upwards and good literacy skills are an essential tool in learning across the curriculum. Our tutors deliver English tuition that covers everything from Primary, through to the 11 plus exams, as well GCSE and A-Level Language and Literature, International Baccallureate (IB) and Degree level. You may want to improve your child’s literacy or merely want a little help for you to read poetry as a hobby!

In the UK it is mandatory for all students to study English as it is a core part of the National Curriculum. We can provide excellent tutors who are able to adapt their learning styles to meet those of the student, helping to break down their English tuition into bite size chunks. Each student has different learning styles which the tutor will assess and therefore enabling the student to progress in a way they are best able to.

You may require an English tutor for a range of reasons. It could be to prepare your child for an exam or to help with spelling, punctuation and grammar. Tutors can also help to increase confidence, support learning English as a second language or work with children with specific needs including dyslexia. We can also provide tutors to work with adults, whether it is support on adult literacy, learning English as a second language or a hobby like poetry appreciation.
