Throughout my dog training career, I've had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of dog breeds, ranging from powerful breeds like the Cane Corso and Rottweiler to smaller ones like the Maltese and Chihuahua.

My expertise lies in helping dogs and puppies learn both on- and off-lead obedience as well as addressing the common issue of lead pulling.

Leadership

The foundation of my philosophy is being a leader to your dog. Dogs who do not have a figure in their life to look up to are under a tremendous amount of stress as they feel the need to be the ones making the decisions which is especially problematic for fearful and reactive dogs. By establishing ourselves as leaders, our dogs are able to become calm and relaxed as they start to understand that we are in control of different situations and that we can keep them safe. This is the foundation to building a healthy and happy relationship with your dog.

Positive Reinforcement

An aspect of being a good leader to our dogs is showing our dogs that we appreciate their good behaviour. This can be done through tools such as treats, toys, our voice or anything that our dogs find reinforcing!

Corrections

Just as we reinforce our dogs’ good behaviour with rewards and praise, it’s equally essential to correct inappropriate behaviour. Dogs, like humans, learn best when they have clear, consistent guidelines. By using corrections thoughtfully, we help them understand what is unacceptable and redirect them to appropriate behaviours. This approach creates a ‘black-and-white’ framework: certain actions have consequences (through corrections), while desirable behaviours are encouraged and rewarded (through positive reinforcement).

Corrections provide a clear boundary that prevents confusion, helping a dog understand which behaviours won’t be rewarded or tolerated. This is especially important for dogs as they thrive with consistent, straightforward communication. Without corrections, a dog may not fully understand the boundaries and could develop habits that are harmful to themselves, other dogs, or people.

Exercise

A huge factor in the development of behavioural issues is simply a lack of exercise. Dogs with too much pent up energy feel a strong need to release it. This unspent energy will soon find outlets that take the form of inappropriate behaviours. Thus, an important part of my philosophy is making sure that we are giving appropriate exercise to our dogs.

Consistency

Consistency is of utmost importance in order to ensure long term success. After undergoing my training plans, the training will only remain successful if you continue to put into practice what I have taught you.
