Myofascial release (MFR) has been described as an umbrella term for a wide variety of manual therapy techniques in which pressure is applied to muscle and fascia.

Myofascial Release (MFR) & Myofascial Induction Therapy (MIT) also known as Trigger Point Therapy.

This is bodywork, not massage!

MIT is characterised as manual tissue remodelling, always avoiding arbitrary stimulus application (altered force intensity and direction), focusing on the intrinsic natural tissue response.

MFR was defined in this systematic review as; "a form of manual therapy that involves the application of a low load, long duration stretch to the myofascial complex, intended to restore optimal length, decrease pain, and improve function."

The practitioner, Cherie's approach is based on a classic seminal text that introduced her to the joy of Myofascial Release for Fibromyalgia sufferers, and then post-surgical clients alike, Travell & Simons’ Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Part I & II. Cherie has also incorporated some of John F. Barnes’ Myofascial teachings.

"Fascia is fascinating to me, the fact that it literally holds us together in a continuous state of tensegrity -tension integrity- is just as important as biomechanics, which is evident once you understand how it functions holographically as 7 clinically applicable myofascial lines (anatomy trains). And because it dictates everything from where I start to where I finish, just like a GPS road map, the information continually updates along the journey."

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE TREATMENT?

People can leave their clothes on, as it’s easy to engage with the triggerpoints (TPS).

There are absolutely no lotions or oils used. Cherie may use a range of myofascial tools made in many shapes, pf stone, plastic, wood or metal to assist with the specific type of release wanted. It’s slow and measured, with the active trigger points being deactivated as the work progresses. Cherie will start at the ‘outposts’ - those active but furthest away from the acute epicentre. This allows Cherie to approach quietly, with tact, to gently release it.

By the time we reach the stiff hip or frozen shoulder, the majority of active triggerpoints (ATPS) has greatly reduced, allowing the facial range of movement / gliding to easily increase. While MFR & MIT are basically the same, for this purpose, “induction” is related to the facilitation of movement, rather than passive stretching (or release) of the fascial system. The result is long-lasting changes.

STAGES IN THE TREATMENT:

Myofascial Structural Release

Structural release involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into areas of tightness, restriction, or pain until there is a release in the body. Never forceful; pressures are applied to gently reach the barrier of the tissue restriction. This response is only elicited when pressure is sustained and uninterrupted – no poking, bouncing, manipulating, or rubbing!

Myofascial Unwinding

Just hanging out melding* and creating space takes the unwinding to a deeper level to thoroughly clear out old patterns and effect new ones. Checking in to see if something else needs to be reset before moving on.

*Melding is the point where the restriction (resistance) becomes the release - it’s when you fell the pain or restriction loosen and release. The process can take as little as 90 seconds, or waiting for the meld to happen, which may take as long as twenty minutes just hanging out at the same place, waiting to feel the unwinding happening, we are creating space which allows for new ease of movement.

Myofascial Rebounding

This is like getting desert before dinner.

This is the point in the session where the client is already feeling more ease, Cherie might have them get up and walk around, both so they feel the new options available & to see what still needs tweaking.
